Wellcare Medicare Advantage Plans 2027: Coverage, Costs & Ratings

Reviewed by Russell Noga, Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker (all 50 states) — Last updated September 28, 2026

Wellcare is the Medicare brand of Centene, the sixth-largest Medicare Advantage carrier in the country. It sells in 32 states and more than 1,850 counties, and it competes almost entirely on price and on benefit cards rather than on network prestige.

Two things about Wellcare matter more than anything else going into 2027: it made the largest quality improvement of any carrier in the market, from a very low base, and it narrowed the grocery and utility allowances that brought a lot of its members in. Below is the full picture, and how to judge whether a Wellcare plan is the right one in your county when 2027 details publish on October 1, 2026.

Wellcare Medicare Advantage Plans 2027: At A Glance

Members About 960,000, down roughly 79,000 year over year
Market position Sixth-largest Medicare Advantage carrier

These figures reflect the current plan year. 2027 Wellcare plans, premiums, allowances and benefits become viewable on October 1, 2026 and may change. Not all plans offer all benefits, and availability varies by county.

Wellcare’s pitch is affordability. Nearly half its plans carry no monthly premium, and where a premium applies it has averaged under $30. Most plans include Part D drug coverage. What you are trading for that price is network depth and, historically, plan quality scores. To see how the whole field compares, start with our Medicare Advantage plans 2027 comparison.

Wellcare Medicare Advantage changes for 2027 including dual-eligible plans and grocery allowance limits

What Changed Going Into 2027

While most national carriers spent the year cutting counties, Wellcare added 51 of them, across California, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Nevada, Texas and North Carolina. That is the good news. The harder news is what happened to the extras.

DUAL-ELIGIBLE PLANS EXPANDED

Wellcare moved its older Medicare-Medicaid Plans into integrated dual-eligible special needs plans across Arizona, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas, joining California, Florida, Hawaii and New Jersey. Members in those plans were moved over automatically. If that is you, the Annual Notice of Change is the document that tells you what your new plan covers.

GROCERY AND UTILITY MONEY NARROWED

A federal program that allowed plans to offer allowances for groceries, gas, rent and utilities is being phased out. Those benefits now sit in a program limited to members with qualifying chronic conditions, such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disorders or chronic lung conditions. Members who do not qualify are limited to over-the-counter items and out-of-pocket medical costs instead. Not all members will qualify.

This matters because the grocery allowance is what brought a lot of people to Wellcare in the first place. If it was the reason you enrolled, check whether you still qualify before you renew. If you no longer do, the plan you have may not be the plan you chose.

The Wellcare Spendables Card

The benefit Wellcare leads with is the Spendables card: one preloaded card accepted at more than 66,000 retailers across its 32-state footprint. Depending on the plan, it can cover over-the-counter health items and out-of-pocket dental, vision and hearing costs. Wellcare has also merged its rewards programme into the same card, so points earned for annual wellness visits, flu shots and health screenings land in the same place.

Allowance amounts vary by plan and county, and Wellcare does not publish them centrally. The card is the headline; the balance on it is the thing to check. Ask for the dollar figure on the specific plan in your ZIP code before you decide.

Other benefits that run across the lineup: $0 or low copays for primary care on all plans, $0 routine physicals and preventive screenings, insulin capped at $35 or 25% of the negotiated price, $0 Part D vaccines, and prescription out-of-pocket costs capped for the plan year. Preferred pharmacies include Walgreens, CVS and select grocers.

Wellcare star ratings compared with Kaiser, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Elevance and Humana

Where Wellcare Sits On Quality

This is the part to be straight about. Wellcare’s enrollment-weighted average star rating is 3.39 against an industry average near 3.98, and it is the lowest of the major carriers. The share of its members in 4-star-or-better plans is more than 18%.

The direction, though, is the best in the industry. That 18% was about 1% the year before. No other carrier moved that far, and Elevance was the only other one that moved up at all while Aetna and Humana slipped. A carrier climbing from a low base is a different proposition from one sliding down from a high one, and both facts belong in the same sentence.

Never judge a plan by its carrier average. Ratings are set plan by plan and county by county, and Wellcare has 4-star plans in some markets and weak ones in others. Look up the rating on the exact plan sold in your ZIP code. Our guide to the 2027 Medicare Advantage star ratings explains what the score actually measures.

Who A Wellcare Plan Fits, And Who It Does Not

IT FITS IF

You qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid, where Wellcare’s integrated dual plans are genuinely strong. You are shopping on premium and the $0 plan in your county has your doctors in it. You have a qualifying chronic condition and the condition-based allowances apply to you. Or the specific Wellcare plan in your county carries 4 stars or better, which some do.

IT DOES NOT FIT IF

You chose the plan for the grocery allowance and no longer qualify for it. You want the strongest quality scores available, where Aetna Medicare Advantage plans 2027 at about 81% of members in 4-star-plus plans and UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans 2027 at more than 77% are the obvious comparisons. Or you need a broad national network for travel or a second home.

If you are weighing Wellcare against the field on quality rather than price, our ranked comparison of the best Medicare Advantage plans 2027 scores every major carrier on ratings, stability and availability. In Minnesota and western Wisconsin the sharpest contrast is a regional one: HealthPartners Medicare Advantage plans 2027 carry some of the highest star ratings in the country in the same counties where Wellcare competes on price.

How To Compare Wellcare Plans For 2027

YOUR 2027 CHECKLIST

Five steps before you pick a Wellcare plan

1

Read your Annual Notice of Change. If you are already on a Wellcare plan, it tells you what happened to your allowances and whether your plan continues.

2

Check whether you still qualify for the extras. Grocery, gas, rent and utility allowances are now tied to qualifying chronic conditions. Ask directly rather than assuming.

3

Look up the star rating on your exact plan. The carrier average of 3.39 does not tell you what the plan in your county scores.

4

On October 1, 2026, price it against two competitors. Use the Medicare Plan Finder tool and enter every prescription with dose and your actual pharmacy.

5

Enroll between October 15 and December 7, 2026. Coverage starts January 1, 2027.

Missed December 7? If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, January 1 to March 31, 2027, lets you switch to another Medicare Advantage plan once, or drop back to Original Medicare.
