Peoples Health Medicare Advantage Plans 2027: Plans, Star Ratings and Louisiana Coverage

Reviewed by Russell Noga, Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker (all 50 states) — Last updated October 9, 2026

Peoples Health is Louisiana’s homegrown Medicare Advantage plan. Doctors in the New Orleans area launched it in 1994, and it grew into one of the best-known Medicare names in the state before UnitedHealthcare announced it would acquire the company in 2018. Today Peoples Health plans are insured through UnitedHealthcare, but they’re still sold under the Peoples Health name, only in Louisiana.

This guide covers the 2027 Peoples Health plan lineup, which parishes each plan serves, its 2027 star ratings, and how it compares with other Louisiana carriers. Annual Enrollment runs October 15 to December 7, 2026, for coverage that starts January 1, 2027.

Peoples Health Medicare Advantage 2027 overview showing 3.5 and 3 star ratings, 21 plans, its 1994 founding and UnitedHealth ownership

Peoples Health 2027 Plan Lineup

Peoples Health lists 21 plans for 2027, including employer group plans. Every individual plan is an HMO-POS, which means you generally use the Peoples Health network but some plans cover certain services out of network. Here is how the individual plans break down.

2027 Plan Who It’s For Where It’s Sold
Choices 65 (HMO-POS) Anyone with Medicare A and B Three regional versions: Greater New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Northshore and River areas, and Southland (Houma-Thibodaux)
Essentials and Extras (HMO-POS) Anyone with Medicare A and B Acadiana, Lake Charles, Alexandria, Monroe and Shreveport-Bossier parishes
Medicare Advantage Giveback LA-4 (HMO-POS) People who want part of their Part B premium back Greater New Orleans and Baton Rouge area parishes
Patriot No Rx (HMO-POS) People who get drug coverage elsewhere, such as through the VA All Louisiana parishes
Complete Care (HMO-POS C-SNP) People with qualifying chronic conditions Across Louisiana, in several regional versions
Secure Health, Secure Complete and Dual Complete (HMO-POS D-SNP) People with both Medicare and Medicaid Across Louisiana, in regional versions

Plans and benefits vary by parish, and not every plan is sold in every area. If you have both Medicare and Medicaid or a qualifying chronic condition, see our guide to Medicare Advantage special needs plans.

Compare Every Louisiana Carrier

Louisiana has 122 Medicare Advantage plans from 11 carriers for 2027, including Humana, Devoted, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana and Aetna. See our guide to Medicare Advantage plans in Louisiana.

What Peoples Health Plans May Include

Peoples Health highlights these benefits for 2027. What you actually get depends on the plan and parish:

✔

$0 monthly premiums on many plans. You still pay your Part B premium.

✔

A Part B premium giveback on the Giveback plan, which lowers what you pay for Part B each month.

✔

Dental, vision and fitness benefits.

✔

Over-the-counter allowances on some plans. The Essentials and Giveback LA-4 plans do not include an OTC benefit for 2027.

✔

Transportation and respite care on select plans.

✔

UnitedHealth Passport, which can extend in-network coverage when you travel outside Louisiana on eligible plans.

Because Peoples Health plans are HMO-POS plans, you’ll generally choose a primary care doctor and use the Peoples Health network. Learn more about how Medicare Advantage HMO plans work. Check each plan’s 2027 Summary of Benefits for exact premiums, copays and out-of-pocket limits.

Louisiana 2027 Medicare Advantage star ratings comparing Peoples Health with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana, Humana, Aetna and Healthy Blue

Peoples Health 2027 Star Ratings

Peoples Health has two Medicare Advantage contracts. For 2027, one earned 3.5 stars and the other earned 3 stars, both below the national average of 3.99. Here is how that compares with other Louisiana carriers.

Louisiana Carrier (Contract) 2027 Overall Stars
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana 4.5
Humana Health Benefit Plan of Louisiana 4.5
HMO Louisiana (Blue Cross) 3.5
Aetna Medicare (two Louisiana contracts) 3.5 / 3.5
Peoples Health (two contracts) 3.5 / 3
Healthy Blue 3

Star ratings aren’t the only thing that matters. Peoples Health’s long history in Louisiana means many members choose it for its local network and doctors they already know. But if ratings weigh heavily for you, compare it with Humana Medicare Advantage plans and Blue Cross options in your parish. See all carriers in our 2027 Medicare Advantage star ratings.

Peoples Health vs UnitedHealthcare

Peoples Health is part of UnitedHealthcare, and its plans are insured through UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company or an affiliate. In Louisiana, UnitedHealthcare uses the Peoples Health name for many of its Medicare Advantage plans, including its dual-eligible plans, so you may see both names on the same plan materials.

For members, the Peoples Health name means a Louisiana-focused network and local service, backed by a national company. Benefits like UnitedHealth Passport come from that connection. To compare UnitedHealthcare’s plans in other states, see our guide to UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans 2027.

Who Peoples Health Fits

A good fit if you:

✔

Live in Louisiana and your doctors are in the Peoples Health network

✔

Want a $0-premium plan or a Part B premium giveback

✔

Have both Medicare and Medicaid or a qualifying chronic condition

✔

Get drug coverage through the VA and want the Patriot No Rx plan

Look harder at other options if you:

!

Put star ratings first, since two Louisiana carriers earned 4.5 stars for 2027

!

Want a PPO with broad out-of-network coverage

!

Spend long stretches of the year outside Louisiana

Before You Enroll: 2027 Checklist

1

Confirm your parish. Each Peoples Health plan has its own regional service area.

2

Check your doctors and hospitals. HMO-POS plans work best when your providers are in network.

3

Run your prescriptions. Compare drug costs, or choose Patriot No Rx only if you have other drug coverage.

4

Compare the giveback with the extras. A Part B giveback plan may drop benefits like an OTC allowance.

5

Read your Annual Notice of Change. Some members are being moved into different 2027 plans.

6

Mark the dates. Medicare Open Enrollment 2027 runs October 15 to December 7, 2026.
