Wellpoint Medicare Advantage Plans 2027: States, Star Ratings and What to Know

Reviewed by Russell Noga, Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker (all 50 states) — Last updated October 9, 2026

Wellpoint is the Medicare and Medicaid brand of Elevance Health, the same company behind Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. If the name sounds new, that’s because it is: Amerigroup health plans were renamed Wellpoint in January 2024. Wellpoint lists Medicare plans in seven states: Arizona, Iowa, New Jersey, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and West Virginia.

This guide covers where Wellpoint Medicare Advantage plans are sold, the plan types it offers, its 2027 star ratings, and how to decide whether a Wellpoint plan fits you. Annual Enrollment runs October 15 to December 7, 2026, for coverage that starts January 1, 2027.

Is Wellpoint Medicare or Medicaid?

Both. Wellpoint sells Medicaid plans in several states and Medicare plans in others, which is why so many people search to find out which one their card belongs to. On the Medicare side, Wellpoint offers:

  • Medicare Advantage HMO plans that may include medical, hospital, drug, dental, vision and hearing coverage in one plan.
  • Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans (D-SNPs) for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid.
  • Chronic Condition Special Needs Plans (C-SNPs) for people with conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, lung conditions or end-stage renal disease.
  • Institutional Special Needs Plans (I-SNPs) for people who need long-term care.

If you have both Medicare and Medicaid, a Wellpoint D-SNP keeps your Medicaid benefits and adds Medicare Advantage coverage on top. For more on how these plans work, see our guide to Medicare Advantage special needs plans.

Where Wellpoint Medicare Advantage Plans Are Sold

Wellpoint’s Medicare footprint is much smaller than its sister brand Anthem’s. Plans are sold county by county, so a state on this list doesn’t mean every county has a Wellpoint plan.

State What to Know
Texas Wellpoint Texas contract rated 3 stars for 2027. Compare with other carriers on our Medicare Advantage plans in Texas page.
Arizona Adds a new home-care I-SNP in the Phoenix area for 2027.
New Jersey HMO, D-SNP and C-SNP options; Wellpoint New Jersey contract rated 3 stars for 2027.
Tennessee Wellpoint Tennessee contract rated 3 stars for 2027.
Iowa Wellpoint Iowa contract rated 3.5 stars for 2027.
Washington and West Virginia Listed on Wellpoint’s Medicare site; check plan availability by ZIP code.

In states where Wellpoint doesn’t sell Medicare Advantage, Elevance usually offers plans under the Anthem name. See our guide to Anthem Medicare Advantage plans.

Wellpoint 2027 Medicare Advantage star ratings by contract compared with the 3.99 national average

Wellpoint 2027 Star Ratings

This is Wellpoint’s weak spot. All six Wellpoint contracts landed at 3 or 3.5 stars for 2027, below the national average of 3.99. Analysts listed Elevance among the larger insurers whose ratings slipped this year.

Wellpoint Contract 2027 Overall Stars
Wellpoint Iowa, Inc. 3.5
Wellpoint Health Plans, Inc. 3.5
Wellpoint Insurance Company 3.5
Wellpoint Texas, Inc. 3
Wellpoint New Jersey, Inc. 3
Wellpoint Tennessee, Inc. 3

A 3-star rating isn’t a reason to rule a plan out on its own. Star ratings blend dozens of measures, and a plan that covers your doctors and drugs at a low cost may still be the better choice for you. But if quality ratings matter most to you, compare Wellpoint with higher-rated carriers in your county. See every carrier’s results in our 2027 Medicare Advantage star ratings.

What Wellpoint Plans May Include

Wellpoint is an HMO carrier, which means you’ll generally use doctors and hospitals in the plan’s network and may need referrals to see specialists. Learn more about how Medicare Advantage HMO plans work. Depending on the plan and county, 2027 Wellpoint plans may include:

  • Low or $0 monthly premiums on many plans. You still pay your Part B premium.
  • Part D prescription drug coverage built into most plans.
  • Dental, vision and hearing benefits.
  • A Benefits Prepaid Card for eligible over-the-counter items, healthy foods or utilities, with some allowances limited to members with qualifying chronic conditions.
  • Transportation to medical appointments on some plans.
  • SilverSneakers fitness on select plans.

Not all plans offer all benefits, and Benefits Prepaid Card allowances expire at the end of each month or quarter if unused. Check the 2027 Summary of Benefits for the exact plan you’re considering.

Who Wellpoint Fits

A good fit if you:

  • Have both Medicare and Medicaid and want a D-SNP with extra benefits
  • Live with a chronic condition that qualifies for a C-SNP
  • Want a low-premium HMO and your doctors are in Wellpoint’s network
  • Value everyday extras like a prepaid card for groceries or over-the-counter items

Look harder at other options if you:

  • Want a PPO with out-of-network coverage
  • Put star ratings at the top of your list
  • Travel often or split the year between states

Before You Enroll: 2027 Checklist

  1. Confirm Wellpoint sells plans in your county. Availability is county by county, even within the seven states.
  2. Check your doctors and hospitals. HMO plans generally don’t cover routine out-of-network care.
  3. Run your prescriptions. Compare drug tiers and deductibles for every medication you take.
  4. Check special needs eligibility. D-SNPs need Medicaid, and C-SNPs need a qualifying diagnosis.
  5. Compare star ratings in your county. Wellpoint’s 3 to 3.5 stars may trail other local options.
  6. Mark the dates. Medicare Open Enrollment 2027 runs October 15 to December 7, 2026.
