HAP Medicare Advantage Plans 2027: Plans, Star Ratings & Coverage

Reviewed by Russell Noga, Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker (all 50 states) — Last updated October 9, 2026

KEY TAKEAWAY

HAP, Henry Ford Health’s health plan, is one of the few Medicare Advantage insurers growing in Michigan going into 2027. Its HMO and PPO plans are rated 4 out of 5 stars for 2026, its Medicare Advantage membership grew about 46% in a year, and its network now covers the entire Lower Peninsula.

HAP Medicare Advantage plans 2027 are now viewable on Medicare Plan Finder. HAP (Health Alliance Plan) is a Detroit-based insurer owned by Henry Ford Health, and it sells only in Michigan. That local focus is the whole story: while national carriers trim counties and benefits for 2027, HAP has said publicly that it is not going to be in and out of counties.

Below is what HAP offers, how its plans are rated, what is changing in Michigan for 2027, and how to decide whether an HAP plan is right for you before Annual Enrollment closes December 7, 2026.

Is HAP A Medicare Advantage Plan?

Yes. HAP is a private health insurer with Medicare contracts to sell Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans in Michigan. When you join an HAP Medicare Advantage plan, HAP replaces Original Medicare as the company that pays your hospital and medical claims, and most of its plans include Part D prescription drug coverage. You keep paying your Part B premium.

HAP also sells other types of coverage, including Medicare Supplement plans and employer plans, so not every HAP card is a Medicare Advantage card. A common question is whether HAP Senior Plus is a Medicare Advantage plan. It is: HAP Senior Plus is one of HAP’s Medicare Advantage plan families, offered as an HMO-POS and as a PPO.

Integrated with Henry Ford Health. Because HAP is owned by a health system, its plans are built around Henry Ford Health doctors and hospitals, and its network also includes many other providers across the Lower Peninsula. Always confirm your own doctors are in network for 2027.

HAP Medicare Advantage Plan Types For 2027

HAP sells several plan families. The 2026 lineup is below; 2027 names, premiums and benefits can change and vary by county, so confirm what is offered in your ZIP code.

✔

HMO plans: HAP Medicare Connect, HAP Medicare MedicalAccess, HAP Medicare Superior, HAP Henry Ford Select and HAP Senior Plus Henry Ford Tiered Access. You use HAP’s network and usually choose a primary care doctor.

✔

HMO-POS: HAP Senior Plus, which may let you use some out-of-network services at a higher cost.

✔

PPO plans: HAP Senior Plus, HAP Medicare Explore, HAP Medicare Prime and HAP Member Assist. You can see out-of-network providers at a higher share of the cost.

✔

Dual Special Needs Plans: HAP Medicare Complete Duals (HMO D-SNP) and HAP Medicare Complete Assist (PPO D-SNP), for people with both Medicare and Medicaid.

The same plan family can have a different premium, out-of-pocket maximum and drug list from one county to the next. To see which 2027 HAP plans are available in your area, enter your ZIP code at the top of this page.

Is HAP Leaving Medicare Advantage In 2027?

No. HAP is moving in the opposite direction from most carriers. In September 2026, Becker’s reported that HAP’s Medicare Advantage membership reached 132,566 as of June 30, 2026, up 45.8% from 90,935 a year earlier. HAP added about 40,000 members, kept about 92% of its existing members, and expanded its network across the entire Lower Peninsula with about 96% of providers in network.

IN HAP’S OWN WORDS

“We are not a payer that’s going to be in and out of counties, degrading benefits or doing service area reductions,” HAP President Margaret Anderson told Becker’s. “As a regional plan and an integrated delivery system, we’re here for the long term.”

That does not mean nothing changes. Individual plans can still change premiums, copays, drug lists and extra benefits from year to year. If you are an HAP member, read the Annual Notice of Change HAP mailed you to see exactly what is different on January 1, 2027.

HAP Medicare Star Ratings

HAP reports 4 out of 5 stars for its 2026 Medicare Advantage HMO plans and 4 out of 5 stars for its PPO plans. HAP says it is the only Michigan-based health plan to earn 4 stars or higher for both HMO and PPO for seven years in a row.

Four stars is above average and puts HAP ahead of many plans in the state. CMS publishes new ratings each October, so check the 2027 rating for the exact HAP plan in your county on Medicare Plan Finder. Our guide to the 2027 Medicare Advantage star ratings explains what the scores measure.

Ratings are set by contract, not by company. HAP’s HMO, PPO and D-SNP contracts are each rated separately, so look up the rating that applies to the plan you are considering.

What HAP Plans May Include In 2027

Every HAP Medicare Advantage plan must cover everything Original Medicare covers. Beyond that, benefits vary by plan and county. Depending on the plan and area, 2027 HAP plans may include:

✔

Part D prescription drug coverage built into the plan

✔

Routine dental, vision and hearing benefits

✔

An over-the-counter allowance

✔

Fitness programs and $0 preventive care

✔

Extra support for members of Dual Special Needs Plans

Not all plans offer all benefits. For 2027, the maximum Part D deductible is $700 and the yearly cap on covered drug costs is $2,400. Compare the out-of-pocket maximum, premium and your drug costs together to find your real yearly cost.

Who An HAP Plan Fits, And Who It Does Not

IT FITS IF

You live in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula and use Henry Ford Health or other HAP network doctors. You want a 4-star plan from a carrier that is growing rather than cutting. You want a PPO option from a Michigan-based insurer. Or you have Medicare and Medicaid and want a coordinated Dual Special Needs Plan.

IT DOES NOT FIT IF

You live outside HAP’s service area, including parts of the Upper Peninsula, so confirm by ZIP code. You spend long stretches out of state, where HMO coverage is limited to emergencies. Or your key specialist or hospital is not in HAP’s 2027 network. In those cases compare Humana Medicare Advantage plans or UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans 2027 in your county.

How To Compare HAP Plans For 2027

YOUR 2027 CHECKLIST

Five steps before you pick an HAP plan

1

Read your Annual Notice of Change. If you are already an HAP member, it lists every 2027 change to your plan.

2

Choose HMO or PPO. HMOs usually cost less; PPOs let you go out of network at a higher cost.

3

Check your doctors and hospital. Search the 2027 HAP provider directory, not last year’s.

4

Price it against two competitors. Enter every prescription with dose and pharmacy, and compare total yearly cost including the out-of-pocket maximum.

5

Enroll between October 15 and December 7, 2026. Coverage starts January 1, 2027.

Missed December 7? If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, January 1 to March 31, 2027, lets you switch plans once or return to Original Medicare.
