Molina Medicare Advantage 2027: Standard Plans End, Dual Plans Stay

Reviewed by Russell Noga, Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker (all 50 states) — Last updated November 2, 2026

Molina Healthcare is leaving the standard Medicare Advantage market for 2027. Its traditional Medicare Advantage prescription drug (MAPD) plans, the ones anyone with Medicare could join, end on December 31, 2026. What remains are plans for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid.

Our count of CMS’s 2027 plan files confirms it: every one of the 43 individual Medicare Advantage plans filed by Molina and its affiliates for 2027 is a dual-eligible special needs plan (D-SNP). This guide explains what ended, where Molina’s dual plans are still sold, and what to do if your Molina plan is not coming back.

Molina CEO Joseph Zubretsky said the company “will exit the traditional MAPD product for 2027,” explaining that it “does not align with our strategic shift to focus exclusively on dual-eligible members in Medicare,” Fierce Healthcare reported. Becker’s Payer Issues put the MAPD business at about $1 billion in yearly premiums, against roughly $5 billion in the dual-eligible business Molina is keeping. Live Insurance News reports about 99,100 individual MAPD members are affected nationwide.

If Your Molina Plan Is Ending

1

Read your non-renewal letter. It says when coverage ends and whether you were moved anywhere. Do not assume you were placed in a new plan.

2

Check whether you have Medicaid or Extra Help. If you do, a Molina D-SNP or another insurer’s dual plan may be open to you, and you can change plans more often than once a year.

3

Pick a new plan by December 7, 2026 so it starts January 1, 2027 with no gap in drug coverage.

4

If you miss December 7, people whose plan is not renewing get a special enrollment period through the end of February 2027, but coverage starts the month after you join, which can leave a gap.

Your doctors are not tied to Molina

Leaving Molina does not mean leaving your doctors. Many Molina providers also contract with other Medicare Advantage insurers. Check the new plan’s 2027 directory before you enroll.

Choosing a Replacement Plan for 2027

If you had Molina MAPD and you… Look at…
Have Medicare only Standard HMOs and PPOs from other insurers in your county; compare drug costs and the out-of-pocket maximum
Have full Medicaid D-SNPs from Molina (if sold in your county) or other insurers, which often have $0 copays
Get Extra Help or a Medicare Savings Program Plans that accept your level; some D-SNPs do, and all Part D plans honor Extra Help
Want to keep the same doctors Any 2027 plan whose directory lists them; check by exact plan name
