Medicare Advantage Plans 2027: KFF Says 3.1 Million Members' Plans Are Ending

Reviewed by Russell Noga, Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker (all 50 states) — Last updated October 27, 2026

Before you shop Medicare Advantage plans 2027, find out whether your current plan is ending: a KFF report released today, October 27, 2026, finds that about 3.1 million people in Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage will have their plan terminated at the end of 2026.

That includes about 2.8 million people in general-enrollment plans (14% of those members, up from 13% last year) and about 300,000 in special needs plans. Another 1.4 million members are in plans being consolidated, which means their insurer is moving them into a different plan automatically. Annual Enrollment is open now and runs through December 7, 2026, for coverage that starts January 1, 2027.

Regional plans are pulling back too. Terminated vs. Consolidated: Which Letter Did You Get?

Your insurer should have sent a notice by now. The words in that letter decide what happens next:

Your Situation Plan Terminated (Non-Renewed) Plan Consolidated
What happens Your plan ends December 31, 2026 Your insurer moves you into another of its plans
If you do nothing You go to Original Medicare on January 1, 2027, with no drug coverage You’re enrolled in the new plan automatically
Extra time to switch Special Enrollment Period from December 8, 2026, through the end of February 2027 No special period; use Annual Enrollment (by December 7) or the January 1 to March 31 window
Medigap guaranteed-issue rights Yes, generally up to 63 days after your coverage ends No

Source: KFF; Medicare.gov rules for plan non-renewals.

Doing nothing is the risky choice

If your Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage is terminated and you don’t pick a new plan, you’ll have Original Medicare only, with no Part D coverage and no Medigap. Going 63 days or more without creditable drug coverage can trigger a Part D late enrollment penalty that lasts as long as you have Medicare.

If your plan is being consolidated, don’t assume the new plan works the same way. Read its 2027 Annual Notice of Change for the network, premium, copays and drug list, then compare it with other plans in your ZIP code.

Deadlines for Medicare Advantage Plans 2027

✔

Now through December 7, 2026: Annual Enrollment. Pick a new plan by December 7 and it starts January 1, 2027, with no gap in coverage.

✔

December 8, 2026, through the end of February 2027: Special Enrollment Period if your plan is not renewing. Your new plan starts the first of the month after you enroll, so waiting can leave a gap.

✔

Up to 63 days after your coverage ends: Medigap guaranteed-issue rights if your Medicare Advantage plan ends. You can apply as early as 60 days before it ends. Compare the two paths in Medigap vs. Medicare Advantage.

✔

January 1 to March 31, 2027: Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment, a one-time switch for people already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.

The safest move is to choose by December 7. See every date in Medicare Open Enrollment 2027.

What to Do If Your Plan Is Ending

You’ll still have a large field of Medicare Advantage plans 2027 options to choose from. CMS lists 5,532 plans nationally for 2027, and the national average premium is $12.00 a month, down from $14.37. Here is how to replace your plan:

1

Find your notice. Check whether it says your plan is non-renewing (terminated) or that you’re being moved to another plan.

2

List your doctors, hospitals and prescriptions. These decide which replacement plans work for you.

3

Compare plans by ZIP code. Plans are sold by county, so start with what’s available where you live. Use our Medicare plan finder tool guide or the compare button on this page.

4

Check the network. Confirm your doctors are in network for 2027, not just 2026.

5

Compare total costs. Look at the out-of-pocket maximum, copays and drug costs, not just the premium.

6

Read the extras carefully. 2027 plans may include dental, vision, hearing or OTC benefits, depending on the plan and area, but many insurers are trimming extras for 2027. Not all plans offer all benefits.

7

Enroll by December 7, 2026. That way your new plan starts January 1, 2027, with no gap.

If your Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage is terminated and you don’t choose a new plan, you’ll have Original Medicare on January 1, 2027, with no Part D drug coverage and no Medigap. Going 63 days or more without creditable drug coverage can lead to a Part D late enrollment penalty.

➤ When is the deadline to replace a Medicare Advantage plan that is ending?

Choose a new plan by December 7, 2026, during Annual Enrollment so it starts January 1, 2027. If your plan is not renewing, you also have a Special Enrollment Period from December 8, 2026, through the end of February 2027.

➤ Can I get a Medigap policy if my Medicare Advantage plan ends?

If your Medicare Advantage plan is ending, you generally have a guaranteed-issue right to buy certain Medigap policies for up to 63 days after your coverage ends, and you can apply as early as 60 days before. This right does not apply if your plan is only being consolidated.

➤ How do I find out if my Medicare Advantage plan is ending?

Check the notice and the 2027 Annual Notice of Change your insurer mailed this fall. If you can’t find them, call the number on your member ID card or compare plans available in your ZIP code.

➤ Will there still be Medicare Advantage plans in my area for 2027?

Most people will still have choices. CMS lists 5,532 Medicare Advantage plans nationally for 2027, and the average premium is $12.00 a month. What’s available depends on your county, so compare plans by ZIP code.
