Geisinger Medicare Advantage Plans 2027: Coverage, Costs & Star Ratings

Reviewed by Russell Noga, Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker (all 50 states) — Last updated September 30, 2026

Geisinger Gold is the Medicare Advantage line of Geisinger Health Plan, and it serves central and northeastern Pennsylvania. It is a provider-owned plan, which means the health system that treats you and the insurer that pays for it are the same organisation. In practice that shows up in the quality scores: every Geisinger Gold plan carried a 4.5-star CMS rating.

Geisinger also runs the widest premium spread of any Pennsylvania carrier, from $0 to about $136 a month across eight individual plans. That is not a menu of eight similar plans at different prices. The out-of-pocket maximum moves almost exactly opposite the premium, so choosing badly here costs real money. Below is every plan, every number, and how to work out which one is actually cheapest for you.

Geisinger Gold premium versus out-of-pocket maximum comparison across plans

Geisinger Medicare Advantage Plans 2027: How The Lineup Is Structured

Plan (2026 figures) Type Premium Out-of-pocket max
Gold Classic 360 Rx HMO $0 $7,100
Gold Classic Essential Rx HMO $0 $6,750
Gold Heritage HMO $0, plus a $70 Part B giveback $6,700
Gold Value Rx HMO $23 $9,250
Gold Classic Complete Rx HMO $48 $5,700
Gold Classic Advantage Rx HMO $113.90 to $135.90 $3,450
Gold Preferred Complete Rx PPO $0 $7,200
Gold Preferred Advantage Rx PPO $96 to $114 $4,000

These are 2026 plan-year figures, shown so you can see how Geisinger structures its lineup. Geisinger’s 2027 premiums, out-of-pocket maximums and benefits publish county by county on the Medicare Plan Finder starting October 1, 2026. Confirm the numbers on the specific plan sold in your county before you enrol. Premiums on two plans varied by county. Not all plans offer all benefits.

Six HMO plans and two PPO plans. The HMOs keep you inside the Geisinger network except for emergencies; the two Preferred PPO plans let you go out of network at a higher cost share, which matters if you spend part of the year elsewhere or want a specialist outside the system.

Premium Versus Out-Of-Pocket Maximum

Geisinger prices its plans along a straight line. Each step up in monthly premium buys a lower cap on what a bad year can cost you, and the spread at both ends is wide enough to change the answer completely.

Do the arithmetic before you choose. Gold Classic Advantage Rx costs roughly $1,367 more a year than a $0 plan and lowers your worst-case exposure by $3,650. If you expect a heavy medical year, the expensive plan is the cheaper one. If you expect a quiet year and rarely hit your deductible, it is money handed over for nothing.

The outlier is Gold Value Rx. At $23 a month it carries the highest out-of-pocket maximum in the lineup at $9,250, which looks like the worst of both worlds until you notice the $70 a month in over-the-counter credit attached to it. That is $840 a year of spendable benefit against $276 of premium. It is a good plan for someone healthy who actually uses OTC credit, and a poor one for anyone facing a surgery.

Extra Benefits Differ Enormously Between Plans

This is the part people skip, and it is where two plans at the same premium stop resembling each other.

Plan Dental limit Over-the-counter Notable
Gold Classic Advantage Rx $1,250 Not listed Hearing aid coverage, $1,250 per ear every 3 years
Gold Heritage $1,250 $40 a month $70 monthly Part B giveback
Gold Classic 360 Rx $1,000 $50 a quarter $300 eyewear allowance
Gold Classic Complete Rx $750 Not listed Lowest out-of-pocket max among the $0 to $48 plans
Gold Value Rx $100 $70 a month $250 flex card for dental and vision
Gold Classic Essential Rx Not included Not listed No dental, vision or fitness benefit
Both Preferred PPO plans Optional add-on Not listed Health+ package adds dental, vision and hearing for $38 a month

TWO $0 PLANS, VERY DIFFERENT VALUE

Gold Classic 360 Rx and Gold Classic Essential Rx both cost $0 a month. Classic 360 Rx includes $1,000 of dental, $50 a quarter in over-the-counter credit and a $300 eyewear allowance. Classic Essential Rx includes no dental, no vision and no fitness benefit at all. Same price, and one of them is plainly the wrong choice unless you have dental coverage elsewhere.

If dental is what you are shopping for, compare the $1,250 limits on Heritage and Classic Advantage Rx against what other Pennsylvania carriers offer before you decide — our guide to Medicare Advantage plans with dental coverage explains how those allowances actually pay out.

The 4.5-Star Rating, And What It Buys You

Every Geisinger Gold plan carried a 4.5-star CMS rating out of 5. That is above every national carrier’s average and among the best in Pennsylvania. It is also the single strongest argument for Geisinger over a bigger name in the same counties.

WHY PROVIDER-OWNED PLANS SCORE WELL

Star ratings lean heavily on things a health system controls directly: whether members get their screenings, how well chronic conditions are managed, how quickly problems get resolved. When the insurer and the hospital are the same organisation, those measures are easier to move. It is the same reason regional provider plans routinely outscore national carriers. Our guide to the 2027 Medicare Advantage star ratings explains what the score measures and what it does not.

What the rating does not tell you is whether your doctors are in the network. A 4.5-star plan you have to leave your physician to join is not a better plan for you. Check the provider directory first, and check it for every doctor you actually see, not just your primary.

Geisinger Versus The Rest Of Pennsylvania

Geisinger’s footprint is central and northeastern Pennsylvania, which puts it up against a different competitor depending where you live. In the western half of the state the comparison to make is UPMC Medicare Advantage plans 2027, the other big provider-owned plan in Pennsylvania and the closest thing to a like-for-like match. Across the state as a whole, our Pennsylvania Medicare Advantage plans 2027 guide covers every carrier available by region.

Against the national carriers, the trade is the usual regional one: Geisinger gives you higher star ratings and a tighter local network, while a national plan gives you coverage that travels. That trade looks better than usual this year — the large carriers cut hard for 2027, with Centene exiting 344 counties, CVS 103 and UnitedHealthcare 63, while provider-owned regional plans largely held their ground. If you winter somewhere warm or have a second home, look hard at the two Preferred PPO plans rather than the HMOs, or compare against the best Medicare Advantage plans 2027 nationally.

How To Choose A Geisinger Gold Plan For 2027

YOUR 2027 CHECKLIST

Five steps before you enroll

1

Confirm your county is in the service area. Geisinger Gold covers central and northeastern Pennsylvania, not the whole state, and two plans are priced differently by county.

2

Check every doctor you see, not just your primary. The HMO plans keep you in network except for emergencies. If a specialist you rely on is outside it, you want one of the Preferred PPO plans instead.

3

Decide which year you are planning for. A quiet year favours the $0 plans. A year with surgery or a hospital stay in it favours Classic Advantage Rx and its $3,450 cap.

4

Price your prescriptions. Use the Medicare Plan Finder tool and enter every drug with its dose and your actual pharmacy. Two plans with identical premiums can differ by hundreds a year on drugs alone.

5

Enrol between October 15 and December 7, 2026. Coverage starts January 1, 2027.

Already on a Geisinger Gold plan? Read your Annual Notice of Change. It tells you what happened to your premium, your out-of-pocket maximum and your dental limit, and whether your plan continues at all in 2027. Doing nothing renews you into whatever the plan became.

Geisinger Medicare Advantage FAQs

➤  Is Geisinger Gold a good Medicare Advantage plan?

On quality, yes. Every Geisinger Gold plan carried a 4.5-star CMS rating out of 5, above every national carrier’s average and among the best in Pennsylvania. The limit is geography and network: it covers central and northeastern Pennsylvania, the HMO plans keep you inside the Geisinger network, and a high rating does not help if your doctors are outside it.

➤  How many Geisinger Gold plans are there?

Eight individual plans: six HMO plans and two Preferred PPO plans. Premiums run from $0 to about $136 a month, the widest spread of any Pennsylvania carrier, and the out-of-pocket maximum moves in the opposite direction, from $9,250 down to $3,450.

➤  Which Geisinger Gold plan has the lowest out-of-pocket maximum?

Gold Classic Advantage Rx, at $3,450, with a premium of roughly $114 to $136 a month depending on county. It costs about $1,367 more a year than a $0 plan and lowers your worst-case exposure by $3,650, so it is the cheaper plan in a heavy medical year and the more expensive one in a quiet year.

➤  Does Geisinger Gold include dental coverage?

Most plans do, but the limits vary enormously and one plan has none. Gold Heritage and Gold Classic Advantage Rx carried $1,250 dental limits, Gold Classic 360 Rx $1,000, Gold Classic Complete Rx $750 and Gold Value Rx $100 plus a $250 flex card. Gold Classic Essential Rx included no dental, vision or fitness benefit. The two Preferred PPO plans offer dental as part of an optional Health+ package at about $38 a month.

➤  Does Geisinger Gold have a Part B giveback plan?

Yes. Gold Heritage carried a $70 monthly Part B premium giveback alongside a $0 plan premium, a $1,250 dental limit and $40 a month in over-the-counter credit. Its out-of-pocket maximum was $6,700. Givebacks are reset every year, so confirm the 2027 amount on the plan sold in your county rather than assuming it carries over.

➤  What counties does Geisinger Gold cover?

Geisinger Gold serves central and northeastern Pennsylvania, not the entire state. Service areas are set county by county and two plans were priced differently depending on county, so confirm both availability and premium for your specific county before you compare. If you are in western Pennsylvania, UPMC is the closer comparison.

New to Medicare?

If you are new to Medicare, then you can enroll in a 2027 Medicare Advantage plan up to three months prior to your Medicare Part B effective date.
